UP BJP MP Savitribai Phule resigns from party -
LUCKNOW: In a setback to the BJP in Uttar Pradesh, its sitting MP from Bahraich, Savitri Bai Phule quit the party accusing it of being anti-Dalit and dividing the society on the basis of religion.

Phule, who has repeatedly been slamming the BJP on account of conspiring to do away with the reservation meant for Dalits, claimed that she would do another `Dhamaka' on December 23 during a rally at Rama Bai Rally Sthal here in Lucknow. She did not rule out the possibility of joining the BSP in the days to come.

Accusing the BJP of befooling the people through its promises, Phule said the BJP was sheltering those who committed atrocities on Dalits and minorities. "Today, the BJP and its associated wings are deliberately raking up the temple issue to divide the people on religious lines and spreading hatred," she said.

Phule, who prefers to wear saffron robes, attacked the BJP saying that instead of working for Dalits, the ruling party was spending money on statues and temples. She said that her various demands including that of quota within promotion were sidelined.

Phule said that her decision to quit the BJP was driven by multiple factors. "There has never been any action on those involved in desecration of statues of BR Ambedkar at various places in the country," she said.
